Stockton Rotary Read-In

Let’s Work Together!
It takes one hour of one day to brighten the lives of a whole classroom!

The next Read–In will be held on a Thursday February 29, 2024.

The Rotary Read – In began in 1991 under the leadership of Dr. Joe Serra, representative of Stockton Rotary, Sue de Polo the Director of the Grupe Foundation and Co-chairman of the Business Council’s Education Committee and other community members to a luncheon at the Hilton. The purpose of the lunch was to educate businesses about the need for private funding in Stockton schools. School principals created a list of needs and over 90% of the requests had to do with books, reading, literacy, libraries, etc. The idea with the notion that if every Rotarian and businessperson in the community gave a book to a school that we could help the libraries.

Now all our local clubs (Rotary Club of Stockton, North Stockton Rotary, Sunrise Rotary and Pacific Rotary) have joined to make this event even more effective in our community as well as a sustainable service project. Interactors from the various high school clubs are participating as well as partnering with local businesses, churches and agencies to read to over 62 schools in Stockton, Lincoln, Lodi and Manteca.

Readers will spend approximately a half an hour with a preschool – 3rd grade classroom reading a book, answering questions and leaving the book behind for the school. Some readers like to dress up as a character, some bring some things to share and all have a great time!

Barnes and Noble is partnering with the Rotary Read – In and will donate a percentage of the book sales to the Stockton San Joaquin County Public Libraries. Just say “Rotary Read – In” when purchasing!

If you or your business/organization would like to participate in the Rotary Read – please contact Jim Dugoni at jdugoni@pacific.edu for more information.
