“The Rotary Club of Stockton Begins the 2nd Century of Service to the Stockton Community”


Activities

  • Call to Order and Welcome!  President Colleen Stewart called the meeting to order.

    Welcome to our members and their guests to a year of Service Above Self. “Imagine” is our mantra this year, and with your help we can be as successful this year as we have been in the past. Rotary Club of Stockton was formed in 1914 just the 92nd club worldwide. With over 1.4 million Rotarians worldwide.   Rotary International was formed by Paul Harris in Chicago in 1905. Stockton Rotary celebrated our 108 Anniversary just in February. We have a rich history in Stockton.

  • Trivia: In Lakota legend March is the Moon of the sore eyes. Today is Ash Wednesday. In 1933 in 6 States, bank holidays were declared to prevent a run on the banks. President Kennedy established the Peace Corp in 1961 today.  Its National Day of Peanut Butter lovers Day, Endometriosis Awareness Day, International Ideas Month, International Women of Color Day, National fruit compote day, Horse Protection Day, National Pig Day, Share a smile day, World complimentary day and Zero discrimination day.

There are many that are the core of our organization that go unnoticed but not unappreciated. Thanks to everyone that assists us in all we do. I need to thank the set-up team, Sergeant at arms, Ken Steele, Monie Ky.  Matt, our Secretary for all his behind the scene work as well as Louie Lemos, Treasurer. And we can’t forget Sharon for always bringing a book. Finally, the speaker committee for getting interesting speakers lined up for us to hear. District Conference Save the Date – June 24th and its only one day conference to be held at Ironstone Winery in Murphys

 

 

Club Announcements

DACDB- Everyone should check their information in DacDB as things change and emails, phone numbers, addresses, etc. Please check that the information on yourself is accurate and update it.

SRE Check Presentations: SRE President Paul Kozlow for EFB and Haven of Hope to Olga Rodriguez with Haven of Peace, Elsie Hirata with Community Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired, and Leonard Hansen with Emergency Food Bank.

Rotary Read-In: was a great success and I see it posted all over. SRE Scholarships

Drive by Crabfeed – Has been cancelled due to lack of interest anyone who has paid will get a refund.

International Projects: Marcella Gracewski announced that we have a few members of our club going to El Salvador to bring wheelchairs.

Club Service Chair TJ Save the Date April, 20th for the 60/70’s theme Social Fund Raiser  at “The Well”

Hero’s Lunch – May 3rd and we are seeking sponsors for this event and it will be a dinner event and we will have no lunch meeting that day.

Golf Tournament – Past President Chad Sublet announced a date for the golf tournament of May 12th with more information to come.

Emergency Food Bank: Canned tuna is being collected for March


Program

Speaker: Bruce Blodgett, Executive Director for Delta Protection Commission

Introduced by: Past President Chad Sublet

Bruce was previously with the Department of Water Resources and is no trying to stop the Tunnel that was proposed from Northern California prime Delta farmland waters to Southern California and it adds no new water to their resources than with it.  It will destroy our local habitat and fisheries and salt water will encroach and cause havoc.  He says he wants our help with Commission and that we tell them “NO PROJECT ALTERNATIVE”.  It will harm the delta levies not just the species of life but also the recreational use of the delta too.

Emily Ballus and Mike Davis, Stockton Shelter for the Homeless and speaking on the New Navigation Center Project

Mick Davis is the Director for the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless. He brings over a decade of work experience in Stockton’s housing for the homeless community and foster youth and has worked with the Shelter, Lutheran Social Services and Aspiranet. Mick graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills with a BS in Psychology and minor in Sociology and is a dedicated champion for unhoused individuals to regain their self-sufficiency.

 

Emily Ballus is a board member for the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless where she chairs the new Navigation Center committee. Emily is a long-time advocate for Stockton’s nonprofits serving as a past Executive Director for the Mary Graham Children’s Foundation, Miracle Mile Improvement District and CEO for the YMCA of San Joaquin County. Emily recently completed the Stanford Graduate School of Business’s LEAD executive education program where she routinely presented on Stockton’s homelessness issues.

Birthday and Anniversary Recognitions

Past President Bill Brown had a birthday on the meeting day and had pledged $100 to club finances.
Edith Villapudua had a birthday today as well and donated $100 to SRE and we sang Happy birthday to Bill & Edith.
Pres Colleen Stewart, has a birthday on Friday the 3rd and made a $100 donation to club finances too.
Chris Pappas has a birthday this Saturday the 4th and he is pledging $50 to Polio and $50 Ukraine

Chad Sublet donated $100 to club expenses because of the work done recently by Past President and local dentist Kuy Ky.
