Activities

  • Call to Order and Welcome!  President Colleen Stewart called the meeting to order.

    Welcome to our members and their guests to a year of Service Above Self. “Imagine” is our mantra this year, and with your help we can be as successful this year as we have been in the past. Rotary Club of Stockton was formed in 1914 just the 92nd club worldwide. With over 1.4 million Rotarians worldwide.   Rotary International was formed by Paul Harris in Chicago in 1905. Stockton Rotary celebrated our 108 Anniversary just in February. We have a rich history in Stockton.

  • Thought of the day: Past President Terry Hull reminded us that when he was the President of our club he instituted three things.  He started the meeting by having everyone greet one another and shake hands and of course this was pre-covid and he moved the meeting location from downtown to the country club and he instituted reciting the “Four Way Test at each meeting.

Rotary News

Rotary Direct: We have 21 participants that have our donations electronically our donation taken out automatically and it is easy and adds up fast. Please consider donating this way. See Leonard Hansen, Secretary Matt or myself for more details.
We received a progress report about District Designated Funds (DDF) which is our return of area funds from 3 year ago that were our regional funds sent to RI.  A grant approved that sent $62,151 to Mexico for a Rotary Microfinance Grant.  These loans are to be made to women of heads of households ages 18-68 to help them start a business or expand an existing one.  We are making a difference in the world from our area clubs

Leonard Hansen, our Foundation Chair announced that we received some funds for Rotary International and are well on our way with over $18k towards our goal of $30k.

The Emergency Food Bank with needed donations each month and this month they are collecting boxed mashed potatoes for the holiday season. To learn what they need this month, please see their webpage at Calendar (stocktonfoodbank.org).  We truly thank you kindhearted and generous Rotarians.We  are donating turkeys for September & October so you can make arrangements for turkeys or take the easy route and give a donation and Leonard has the signup sheet for that or we are also seeking boxed mashed potatoes and stuffing.

Club Announcements

Induction: Paulo Marullo by Kuy Ky. Finally we have inducted Dr Marullo who works with Kuy and is alumni of USC and from Italy

Update on the El Salvador project – Marcella’s project and due to supply chain issues, the wheelchairs are delayed so the trip is being delayed until March 2023.

All City Thanksgiving is in the works for November 22nd to be held here at the Stockton Golf & Country Club and the cost is $40.00

Christmas/Holiday Evening event- On December 7th at 5:30 pm also at Stockton Golf & Country Club in lieu of our regular lunch we will have an evening event much like last year with heavy appetizers and a non-hosted bar. More details to come but special entertainment is: Atomik Tommy McClendon performing and interviewed about being a rock star.
December 14th is the children’s luncheon for being planned also here at the club and more details to come

Salvation Army Bellringing project is in December 10th at Hobby Lobby and Dillard’s and Monie Ky is organizing

Presidential Project for Literacy: President Colleen sent an email to all members seeking advisors/volunteers for my President project that she is just beginning. It is involving tutoring from high school students for elementary students, and we are partnering with the Library & Literacy Foundation and San Joaquin A+ and she needs help because this is not my area of expertise-so educators and interested others, please help me and we are on the ground level currently but have funds available immediately for use. Thanks so a few of you that are volunteering for this, and she could use more for my committee. Thanks to those who have already reached out to help.

Imagine Your Story, Imagine Your Impact by Ken Steele

Ken Steele, who did a fantastic job of recounting his story of service with Rotary and meeting the President of Uganda who confessed that had he received the first set of shoes he ever owned from Rotary.  He spoke about his trip to Uganda and the women who formed a Women’s Center there.  He made lifelong friends there and made a difference in their lives but they touched his too.  He was married in the building that is now the Rotary Foundation headquarters but formerly a church.

Our Bolder Future at United Way of SJC by Kristen Spracher-Birtwhistle

Kristen Spracher-Birtwhistle became President/CEO of United Way of San Joaquin County in January, 2019.

Over 25 years’ experience in executive leadership positions in the management of medical group operations and consultant services for Kaiser Permanente. Served in various capacities as Medical Group Administrator, Associate Medical Group Administrator, and Regional Director for The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG)-the largest integrated medical group in the country.

Lead as operational administrator of medical centers and clinics in support of primary care and specialty care initiatives, while strategically working as a region wide consultant leading physician and staff teams towards innovative advancements in the support of patient centric service delivery programs in the Northern California region. She served as the administrative lead for the Allied School of Health Sciences opening a secondary branch at the Stanislaus State campus and creating the Community Partnership Advisory Council for the Health Career Academy in Stockton. She was instrumental in start-up of the award-winning Child Abuse Prevention Services Program for the Northern California Region mobilizing TPMG physicians and staff to recognize, treat and case manage suspected child abuse cases in primary care.

Her work has included expansive support of community benefit initiatives from building a clinic on the campus of elementary schools, to construction and implementation of a medical clinic on wheels that traveled to all corners of the community, to establishment of a Women’s Wellness Conference that ran for over 12 years and major lead of the La Salud Permanente program for The Permanente Medical Group.

She is one of the founders of Pacific’s Advancing Women’s Leadership forum, is a past ATHENA and Susan B. Anthony recipient and the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award from University of the Pacific. She is also the founder of The Eleanor Project a program dedicated to the advancement of women, their causes and mentorship between young and established women.
