“The Rotary Club of Stockton Begins the 2nd Century of Service to the Stockton Community”

Activities

  • Call to Order and Welcome! President Colleen Stewart called the meeting to order.

Welcome to our members and their guests to a year of Service Above Self. “Imagine” is our mantra this year, and with your help we can be as successful this year as we have been in the past. Rotary Club of Stockton was formed in 1914 just the 92nd club worldwide. With over 1.4 million Rotarians worldwide.   Rotary International was formed by Paul Harris in Chicago in 1905. Stockton Rotary celebrated our 108 Anniversary just in February. We have a rich history in Stockton.

Meetings are brought to you live at the Stockton Golf and Country Club.

  • Music Selection: From 1963 The Ronettes ,released  “Be my Baby”
1966  The Youngbloods released “Get together”
1981 The Rolling Stones “Start me Up”.  And a little trivia, in 1995 Microsoft paid the band 12 million pounds to use the song to promote their start button
  • Pledge of Allegiance & Four Way Test – led by Diane Stauffer.
  • Song of the day: Past-President Michael Blower lead us in the  song.
  • Thought of the day:Sharon Tweedy provided the thought of the day. Englishman Joseph Addison wrote in the early 1700’s about happiness. Quote: ‘Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are: Something to do, something to love, something to hope for.’
This certainly addresses our personal life but I thought it also addresses our Rotary life:
    1. Something to do – within our club there are a pleura of things to do from volunteering to help with the Oyate Gathering on Sept. 17th, joining a community activity such as the Stockton Rotary Read In or participating internationally in a project like Marcella’s wheelchair project to El Salvador. What is on your Rotary something to do list?
    2. Something to love – as an example, my Rotary love is fostering literacy in our community through collecting books for Spanos School Library, Christmas books for K – 3rd graders with Santa Bob Blower’s help, supporting Read to Me, Stockton and so on. What is on your Rotary something to love list?
    3. Something to hope for – RI’s 7 areas of focus speak to the idea of hope for a better future for our world. With the addition of the most current focus, Supporting the Environment, Rotary is pledged to make our world a better place. What area of focus fills you with hope?
  • Meeting Sponsor: We have a meeting sponsor this week. Gerardo Garcia, Regional Vice-President of Appreciation and he shared a program he assists businesses/non-profits to get reimbursed for employing during Covid and it’s called Employee Retention Credit under CARES Act .
  • Special Thanks to –  A round of applause for all the Worker Bees of Rotary Stockton. We appreciate you and all your time and effort. There are many that are the core of our organization that go unnoticed but not unappreciated. Thanks to everyone that assists us in all we do. I need to thank the set-up team, Sergeant at arms, Ken Steele, Dwayne Garcia, Eddie Arias, Monie Ky. I want to thank the Board as we had a meeting on Monday. Matt, our Secretary for all his behind the scene work as well as Louie Lemos, Treasurer. And we can’t forget Sharon for always bringing a book. Finally, the speaker committee for getting interesting speakers lined up for us to hear.
  • Concern Report –We have very sad news to report our long term 50-year member, Reid Johnson, passed away last week. His celebration of life is September 2nd at 10:30 at the First Congregational Church.
We have our District Governor Chris Daly that has announced that she has breast cancer and will be having chemo and other treatments and will be scaling some of her Rotary work down and we need to keep her in our prayers.
  • Weekly door prize:We have a ticket for the Oyate Gathering donated by Chris Pappas today. Round of applause for Chris as this is a value of $85.
  • Guest’s of Rotarians – Courtney Hayes came with Tom Perry and has applied for membership
Ben Ky, son of Past President Kuy Ky
Bill Alessio, son of Ron Allison and also applied for membership
Carrie Fox with UOP and came with guest speaker and introduced by Corie Stewart
  • Visiting Rotarians – none

To learn what they need this month, please see there webpage at Calendar (stocktonfoodbank.org).  We truly thank you kindhearted and generous Rotarians.
