(65)

Activities

  • Call to Order and Welcome! Past-President Melanie Vieux welcomed members and guests to the Virtual Rotary Club of Stockton 2021 meeting!
  • Pledge of Allegiance & Four Way Test – Geneva Bamidele.
  • Sharon Tweedy

Thought for the Day – Sharon Tweedy: In historian Johan Norberg’s new book titled “Open: The Story of Human Progress” he states mankind has attained more progress than ever. Specifics like global poverty, child mortality, chronic undernourishment and illiteracy have all declined faster than ever – these being measures of quality of life. Quote: “Literacy might be the most important skill. It’s the skill that makes it possible to acquire other skills. We’ve never seen literacy at these high levels before. Even in most problematic countries around the world.” He went on to write about other issues including climate change, wars and, of course, results of the pandemic. But I like to think the result of Rotary International’s 7 areas of focus around the world is part of 2020’s good news. When Rotarians give to our community and support international projects, we are part of the solutions – we are part of 2021 and now 2021’s good news.

  • Special Thanks Today to – Matthew Grizzle for orchestrating these meetings, Corie Stewart our Zoom meeting entry coordinator, Dudley Drake for his work on speaker recruitment, Leena Mittal for continuing to taking notes (thank you Leena), and Eric Duran for the ultimate publication of the Wheel!

Guest Speaker

Speaker: Jay Schwabe
Introduced by:
Past-President Dudley Drake

Jay Schwabe – Train Museum – Telescope across America
Jay took us back in time when the railroad system was used to deliver the telescope from New York to California. He talked about the various hurdles and difficulties encountered in carrying such a huge item through such a long route. He also explained that they chose railroad over ship because they wanted it to be an event of cheer for the country especially after the period of great depression. He has a lot of great clippings of the news paper in his presentation that showed people waving and cheering for the passing by train carrying the telescope. He also had multiple pictures of events through the journey of the telescope from loading to reaching its destination in Pasadena. It was an entertaining presentation and is available on the Facebook page of Rotary Club of Stockton.

Next Meeting: March 31, 2021
County Supervisor and Rotarian Tom Patti

We know that Tom Patti is one of our current County Supervisors and that he once had a boxing past along with Mike Tyson followed by working in the entertainment business as an actor and writer, but what most of you may be unaware of is his past life working as a florist designing some of the most fragrant and aesthetically vibrant bouquets known to those lucky enough to have purchased them from the street corners of New York City and downtown Lockeford known worldwide for their exotic flowers. Tom’s artistic flair for flowers began when as a child he followed a bee as it flew amongst the many local flowers eventually landing on Tom’s hand and promptly stinging him. Undeterred, Tom realized that there is beauty in pain as he acquired knowledge about flowers that fills his day with joy.
