Guest Speaker
Speaker: Colleen Stewart
Introduced By: Corie Stewart
Colleen’s inspiring presentation shared her heritage, history and culture of her Native family residing in the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The Reservation is the second largest in the US with approximately 120,000 acres in “The Badlands”. Being 28% Native, Colleen, or Tokj ke We (Big Sister), has deep traceable roots to her Grandfather Tunkashila, known as the Great Chief Red Cloud.
Escaping the European expansion of the US in the 1600’s, tribal migrations westward began with rival bands eventually fighting over land and hunting grounds. Hunters of buffalo, the horse became the center of social and political life. Mobile with transportable Teepees enabled movement to Summer and Winter Camps. Living by the 12 Virtues, customs of dress or regalia, scalping, the Louisiana Purchase and the custom of name changes were just a few of the many topics covered.
Being a 7th generation, Colleen’s was proud to share information about, Chief Red Cloud, a skillful hunter, brave warrior and leader of his people. He was able to preserve the language, customs and traditions of the Lakota with his knowledge of how to protect through the language of Treaty. This result is the story of the Lakota, the story of the Oyate, the story of America. Hoka Hey!
