Guest Speaker

Speaker: Wayne Richardson
Introduced By: President Melanie

President Melanie introduced Wayne Richardson, Chief Executive Officer at the Gospel Center Rescue Mission.  Wayne likened the Rescue Mission’s pandemic response to the standard plan for a military convoy that comes under attack – speed up and do not hunker down!

As COVID response, the mission was able to expand their men’s shelter and stand up 3 additional facilities including a COVID facility.  To date, none of the children in the facilities have tested positive for COVID, so the protocols put in place seem to be successful.

The ribbon-cutting for the new children’s playground has been rescheduled to Friday, September 18th.  A tribute sign recognizing Rotary’s contribution to the playground will be a prominent feature.

The mission is opening a newly renovated expansion to 500 beds and moving toward a model for self-sufficiency similar to Delancey St. in San Francisco.  The goal is for 90% fiscal self-sufficiency generated by employment training and revenues generated by partnerships such as a McDonald’s employment feeder program and the manufacturing of new furniture.  The mission projects that this expansion will provide an avenue out of homelessness for any Stocktonian who is interested in making a change
