Due to the recent concerns about the COVID-19 virus and a desire to follow the suggestions of health care professionals, the club will be DARK for the next three week’s.

Possible resumption with an online meeting for the April 8th meeting

Club Rotarian Louis Lemos appeared in an article in the Stockton Record about the police department’s catalytic converter etching program.  His wife insisted that he participate having had 4 catalytic converters stolen in the past year and a half.  Left out of the article (but not in the Wheel!) was Louis’s comment that the police department doesn’t get enough credit for the many great ways they serve the community.  $250 to Rotary Foundation!

Guest Speaker

Speaker: Chief Matthew Reece
Introduced By: James Mousalimas

Chief Matthew Reece talked about the California National Guard Discovery Challenge Academy.  The mission of DCA is to reclaim the high school education of 16 – 18 year olds who are not on track to graduate.  Each year, 1.2 million students drop out of high school.  This is a national crises, so the National Guard has taken on the war to save these kids.

DCA is a volunteer program where cell phones, make-up, social media and family are left behind to attend a quasi-military 5 month program of education.  Two cohorts a year can serve up to 600 cadets annually.  The program features rigorous demands and sometimes cadets want to give up.  But, taking a page from health clubs and cable companies, quitting is made as hard as possible.  When the students complete the program, wrap around services are provided to support their ongoing success.

The program is always looking for mentors, especially for the foster youth and opportunities for the cadets to supply volunteer manpower for events in the community on the weekends.
