Guest Speaker

Speaker: Don Shalvey
Introduced By: Past-President Ann Johnston

Past-President Ann Johnston introduced Don Shalvey, Deputy Director for K-12 Education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he oversees charter schools, teacher preparation, and school and system leadership.

Don shared that the 1,100 employees of the foundation are “impatient optimists” with the goal of reducing inequity around the world and to provide opportunity for every human on the planet to live a productive and healthy life. An interesting work requirement at the foundation is for employees to spend 20% of their time reading and thinking.

The $50 billion Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gifts about $4 billion annually and the 7th largest program supported is Polio Plus.  In Stockton, the foundation has contracted a feasibility study on building a teacher’s village.  The teacher’s village would feature retail on the bottom floor.  Affordable one-bedroom apartments might have an operating cost of $600 per month which are rented to new teachers for $900 per month.  At the end of 3 years, the teacher is given $9,000 to use for a down payment to buy a house.

Another focus area for Stockton is to create up to 11 schools that accelerate and combine opportunities for students to complete requirements for higher education and vocational opportunities. Statistics show that students who participate in these types of programs achieve higher education goals at much higher success rates.
