Guatemala Wheelchair Distribution.

Ally Tieszen, Chrissy Hauer and Faculty member Sandy Bellamy went to Antigua Guatemala in November 2011 to distribute wheelchairs.

Approximately 58 wheelchairs were distributed when they were there. Both Ally and Chrissy told us some information about Guatemala. For example, on average, education in Guatemala lasts just 6 years, and only roughly 40% of those eligible participate. The country is primarily agricultural.

Both Rotary and Hope Haven coordinated the fabrication and distribution of the wheelchairs. Hope Have has a manufacturing facility that’s makes the wheel chairs in Antigua. Many of the people working in the fabrication center are in wheelchairs themselves. Both Ally and Chrissy told us of the many people they helped and shared stories about how the wheel chairs are changing people’s lives.

The speakers also told us how they educated the children on how to use the wheelchairs and they also educated the parents on properly making future adjustments. The wheelchairs can go through numerous adjustments with only one wrench which all recipients received with their wheel chair. On average Hope Have distributes about 10,000 wheel chairs per year.

Both Chrissy and Ally were so moved by this experience that they want to continue volunteering to distribute wheelchairs in the future.

The UOP group was introduced by Joe Serra.

Don told the club how the First Tee program teaches kids the values of integrity, support, hard work, respect and honesty through teaching them the game of golf.

The program is open to all kids and there are numerous scholarship programs for those who cannot afford to participate.

The First Tee program of San Joaquin needs more coaches as the program is growing and will soon be part of the After School Program and is expected to have more participants.

The program consists of 9 Saturday classes and there are 3 tours in the Spring, Summer and Fall.

Don closed his program by telling members of the club many stories from parents and teachers and the feedback regarding the positive impact the First Tee has on the kids who participate.

Last year the program had 329 kids participating. Our local golf profesional, Ricky Barnes, has now given his support for San Joaquin First tee by donating $10,000. He will donate $50 dollars for every birdie and $100 for every eagle this coming year. On October 18th, 2012 Ricky Barnes willl host the first ever Ricky Barnes tournament to help the Local First Tee program.

Currently the program is at The Reserve and Van Buskirk Golf course.

Sanitation Project in the Philippines - Gary Gillis. Stockton Rotary #92 and our District #5220 are partnering with the Rotary Club of Vigan and their District #3790. Our project will construct sanitation facilities (latrines) at 11 high schools in the greater Vigan area in the Philippine state of Ilocos Sur. The sanitation facilities are, in their words, ”little more than outhouses” and are “very dirty, and impossible to clean due to old wood and porous concrete.” Ron Singson, a former Stocktonian, lives in the area and has done several education projects for Rotary with the assistance of Stockton rotary and specifically Liz Hull. Please click here to learn more about the project. A grant over $24,000 was developed for this project

Ed Sprague began his sports career at St. Mary’s High School, went on to graduate from Stanford, then on to the major leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays. In fact, Ed is the only baseball player to possess a World Series ring, World Series College ring, and an Olympic ring.

Coach Sprague presented insights into the way he promotes leadership within the Pacific Tigers baseball team. By dividing the 36 ball players into six “Tiger Packs” along with six Pack Leaders, Ed has created a system to foster the beliefs and mission of the team; to lead by example, to commit, to communicate, to encourage, to serve, and to take personal responsibility, among other goals.

When asked what his personal high point in his sports career was, Ed recounted the College World Series win his team took after having lost to the very same team the year prior. Proof that setting goals and fostering team attitudes results in amazing things.

Ed Sprague was introduced by Joe Serra.

Ed Sprague – UOP Baseball. Head Coach Ed Sprague enters his ninth season at the helm of the Pacific Baseball program in the spring of 2012. He has a combined 179-262 record in his first eight seasons with the Tigers, highlighted by the first back-to-back 30-win seasons in school history as the Tigers finished 2006 at 30-25, after posting a 30-28 mark in 2005. Sprague recorded a third winning season as he led the Tigers to one of their best seasons in program history in 2010 with a 31-23 overall record that included a new program record of 31 victories over Division I opponents. That season Pacific won nine of its 14 series, including sweeping San Jose State from March 26-28. The Tigers also received votes in national top 30 polls on four occasions during the 2010 season. Five players from the 2010 squad were selected in the 2010 MLB Draft. Please click here for more information about our speaker.

Four Decades of the Rotary Club of Stockton

1970-79: Reid Johnson. Rotary was men only. No judges could be members. Stockton had two Rotary Clubs, one north of Harding Way and one south of Harding Way. It didn’t work.

1980-89: Jim Darrah. Women were welcomed to Rotary through a Supreme Court decision. Judy Chambers broke the barrier locally and soothed the feathers of 35 ruffled men in our club.

Only Rotary can get PG&E to ignore bankruptcy and turn the lights back on at the Holiday Inn. The first raffle, Interact Club and Holiday Party occurred during the decade.

1990-99: Jerry Smith. Jerry found that Rotarians don’t make good soldiers. Ursula Meyer became his best buddy. Finally, we know who sent all of those risqué post cards with Ursula’s name on them.

2000-09: Terry Hull, Sr., discovered that there is no good food at noon at the Arena. The club typically gave $32,000 per year to local charities. The Stockton Rotary Endowment continued to grow during the decade.

Our past presidents were introduced by Bill Gass.

Rotary Float - Did you see it in the parade? Jim Woodward did. The float was named “Inching Towards the
End of Polio”. The float was the winner of the Princess’ Trophy – the most beautiful float under 35 feet. Rotary enters a float each year in the parade. Rotary clubs accross the country donate to the Rotary Rose Parade Committee. Our club donated $400.

Thank you’s - President Renna thanked Chad Sublet for coordinating the Children’s Program and Tom Perry, Laura Pinkerton, Julie Boucher and Fred Weibel for their work on our Holiday Party at Laura’s home.

Farewell to Cathy - Cathy Peterson leaves shortly for Blantyre, Malawi where she will be teaching in the new physical therapy program as a Fulbright Scholar. Cathy will keep us posted on her activities. You might click herefor her first blog. We wish you well Cathy.

District Assembly - The third district assembly for this year will be held at the County of Education offices on Arch Road on Saturday January 28. The sessions start at 8AM and lunch is over around 1PM. These meetings are always informative and you get to learn what goes on outside our own club. The club will cover your $25 fee. What a way to spend a Saturday morning. Contact Susan Drake.

Stockton Rotary Centennial - the date is Feb 1, 2014. We wish to make this a celebratory series of events to share a century of service with the greater Stockton community. The committee has chosen five areas of focus. They are Projects, Events, Book, History and Publicity. If you wish to help in one or more of these areas please contact Susan Drake at secretary@stocktonrotary.org We are in need of historical items for our club to include in publications and media announcements. We are asking past presidents and all our members to put on their thinking caps, search your offices and homes for historical tidbits. Please contact Frank Whitney at fwhitney@midcalbbb.org to help him in this task.

Grocery Card Fundraiser – Our new card has the Rotary logo and name on them. Grocery rebate cards are available at the meetings. The Club will receive a rebate of 3% of purchases at SaveMart, Smart Foods, Food Max, and Lucky’s. The card may also be used when purchasing pharmaceuticals. To date we have received over $1531. If you would like additional cards for family, friends see Susan.
