Bob Blower – Stockton Rotary Remembers the Greatest Generation.  Bob was born in Oakland and raised in Walnut Creek.  During his youth in the 40′s and 50′s he attended many fleet weeks and air shows in the bay-area and developed a keen interest in World War II history.  Upon graduation from high school, he received a football scholarship to the University of Idaho.  At Idaho he enrolled in Naval ROTC and was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy the day he graduated from college in 1964.

After tours in the pacific and Vietnam he requested shore duty in San Francisco and to his dismay received orders to Rough and Ready Island in Stockton!  Upon completion of 5 years active duty he took a real estate course at Delta College to learn how to sell his house and save a commission and get back to the bay area. Twenty Five Years of Women in Rotary

Rotary was an all-male organization until in 1987 the Supreme Court ruled that women must be allowed into membership

Judy Chambers was the first female member in the Rotary club of Stockton.  When Judy joined she needed four men to support her entrance into the club.  Judy told the club about her original experiences in the club and she said prior to her joining then President Jim Darrah sent a questionnaire to all members asking about their opinion of women joining the club.  In response, 35 members said they would quit the club if Judy joined.  Judy said that she joined, always felt comfortable and well received and no one quit the club.

Karen Munro joined Rotary  in 1988 and in 1992 Judy Chambers, Karen Munro and Ursula Meyer were the only female members.  Karen became club President in 1995-1996 and at that time there were only 34 female members.  Karen said that she always felt very supported in the club.  She discussed her experiences in the including fund raising and recognitions.  Karen introduced and thanked all current members who helped her during her presidency.

Susan Drake told the club how her grandfather, her father and her husband were all Rotarians.  Susan joined the club during Karen Munro’s presidency.  Susan was the second female club president.  Susan told the club about her experiences in the club, she shared some memories and also expressed how well received and supported she was in the club.  Susan shared with the club her passion for Rotary, so much so that she decided to retire from working for the State of California and devoting her time to Rotary.  Susan’s time in Rotary has included Rotary member, board member, club president, club secretary and District Governor.

Interact Trip – On May 12th, Stagg and Edison Interacters, went to Big Trees State Park. President Renna Beinoris thanked Nick Curtin, Laura Reeves and Steve Luthy for providing a great day at Big Trees with the Interact students.

Rotary House Cleanup – Renna thanked Dave Tygett for coordinating a cleanup day at our  Rotary House which included Ken Norton and his son as well as Chris Papas.

Rotary Youth Exchange to Germany 6/30/12.  We are in need of some help from Rotarian Interact and youth leaders. Our “deadline” just passed and we have about 10 applicants who will travel to Germany in late June and stay with a like minded students for three weeks before returning to California with their friend who will stay three weeks here.  There are 22 young Germans who are excited to come here which leaves us short on District 5220 kids ages 15-19. So we need at least 12 more applicants to fill the program. Please contact the young folks in your sphere of influence to encourage them to apply. We want to make this  year’s program the smashing success that the past several years have been and hope you can help.  Please contact Lee Thoma at  (209) 586-2475.

Rummage Sale – Don Barry.  May 19 is the big day.  Start collecting.  Call Don for pickup.  Need volunteers.  Papers are on our tables to sign up for duties and gifts of precious stuff.

Stockton Rotary Centennial – the date is Feb 1, 2014. We wish to make this a celebratory series of events to share a century of service with the greater Stockton community. The committee has chosen five areas of focus. They are Projects, Events, Book, History and Publicity. If you wish to help in one or more of these areas please contact Susan Drake at secretary@stocktonrotary.org We are in need of historical items for our club to include in publications and media announcements. We are asking past presidents and all our members to put on their thinking caps, search your offices and homes for historical tidbits. Please contact Frank Whitney at fwhitney@midcalbbb.org to help him in this task.

Grocery Card Fundraiser – Our new card has the Rotary logo and name on them. Grocery rebate cards are available at the meetings. The Club will receive a rebate of 3% of purchases at SaveMart, Smart Foods, Food Max, and Lucky’s. The card may also be used when purchasing pharmaceuticals. To date we have received over $1691. If you would like additional cards for family, friends see Susan.

Next Week’s Program – May 16, 2012 — Women in Rotary

Three exceptional leaders in Rotary, that happen to be women, will join together to present “Women in Rotary” at our May 16th meeting.

Karen Munro retired for the third time in 2008 from Comcast Cable where she had served as their Vice President of Government Affairs for many years.  Prior to that, she held various executive positions with Comcast and former cable companies Continental Cablevision, MediaOne, and ATT Broadband.

Karen was the first woman President of the Downtown Stockton Rotary Club (1995-96), and served as District Area Representative the following year.  She is a past recipient of the Athena Award, Business Person of the Year, and 2012 recipient of the Susan B. Anthony Woman of Achievement Award.

Judy Chambers – Judy is currently the Special Assistant to the Vice President for University Advancement at the University of the Pacific.  Prior to this position, she was V.P. for Student Life at Pacific for 27 years.   Judy was the first woman to join Stockton Rotary Club.  She’s done it all!

Susan Drake – Susan Drake has been a member of Stockton Rotary since 1995. She served as President 2004-05, District Governor 2009-10 and has been Club Secretary since July 2005.  She was District Secretary for two years 1999-2001, has served as District Membership Co-Chair, Vocational Services Chair, Annual Programs Chair and will serve a four year term as District Foundation Chair beginning July 1. 

Susan was the Edison High School Interact Advisor and led the Stockton area playground project to Mexico for 14 years.  She has been honored with the Silent Rotarian Award and Avenues of Service Award two different years.  She is a graduate of Leadership Stockton and District 5220′s Leadership Academy.  She is a major donor and member of the Paul Harris Society.  She has hosted a long term youth exchange student from Brazil, 6 short term exchange students and 9 different GSE team leaders or members.It’s sure to be an enjoyable and fun meeting.

History of Women in Rotary -

The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.

“My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01.

The vote followed a decades-long effort of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow for the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.

In 1950, an enactment to delete the word male from the Standard Rotary Club Constitution was proposed by a club in India during the Council. From

1950 to 1989, the Council considered 13 proposals to allow women into Rotary.

In 1977, the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, USA, decided to admit women as members in violation of the RI Constitution and Standard Rotary Club Constitution. Because of this violation, the club’s membership in Rotary International was terminated in March 1978.

In a lawsuit filed by the Duarte club in 1983, the California Superior Court ruled in favor of Rotary International, upholding gender-based qualification for membership in California Rotary clubs. But in 1986, the California Court of Appeals reversed the lower court’s decision, preventing the enforcement of the provision in the state. The California Supreme Court refused to hear the case, and it was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

On 4 May 1987, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issued a policy statement asserting that any Rotary club in the United States could admit qualified women into membership. The RI Board of Directors encouraged “all clubs in the U.S. to give fair and equal consideration to candidates for membership without regard to gender.”

In 1989, at its first meeting after the Supreme Court ruling, the Council on Legislation in Singapore voted to eliminate the requirement in the RI Constitution that membership in Rotary clubs be limited to men.

More than 20 years after the Council’s vote, there are nearly 200,000 female Rotarians. Women have served in leadership positions as high as the RI Board of Directors and The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees. The first female Council representative served in 1998. The 2010 Council is the first in which a female RI director is serving, as a nonvoting member.

Next Week’s Program – May 9, 2012

Patrick Langham and Simon Rowe will share their jazz talents as well as a discussion of jazz music with us.

Dr. Simon Rowe is the current Director of the Brubeck Institute. A well-known jazz pianist, Rowe has played with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie,
Bob Mintzer, Marvin Stamm, Dianne
Schurr and many others. In 1997, Rowe founded Catalyst Productions, a record label dedicated to documenting and championing the work of some of the Midwest’s most outstanding jazz artists.

Patrick Langham joined the Conservatory of Music in the fall of 2003 as associate professor and Director of Jazz Studies. As a saxophonist, Professor Langham has performed with distinguished jazz artists and on numerous jazz festivals throughout the southern United States. At Pacific, Professor Langham directs the Pacific Jazz Ensemble, the jazz combos, and teaches courses in improvisation, jazz history and theory.

It’s sure to be an enjoyable and fun meeting. See you there!

A Letter from Milawi - Hello from Malawi.  Thanks for publicising Cathy’s blogs. They are so infomative.
This has started out as one of my best trips to Malawi.  My first week there was a three-day seminar for our students in orthopedics put on by the faculty; it was the first ever; and I had a chance to participate.  I’m already helping in the physical therapy lab on subjects such as hand, and shoulder; and Cathy has aked me to do a lecture to her class on the knee.
Weather is warm and sunny.  People are so wonderful.  Life is good.

The country is peaceful, and I gather from the responses that the people are quite happy with their new president, Joyce Banda.  She has started out with a definite plan, and is gaining the support from the Parliament. We wish her the very best.  The answer to the African Dilemma is more women presidents!  I’m convinced of this after coming here for 30 years.
That’s it for now.  Need to prepare a lecture. Also by the way, I’m working on my Malawi Story.
Hope your preparations for July 1st are progressing well.

Rotary Youth Exchange to Germany 6/30/12. We are in need of some help from Rotarian Interact and youth leaders. Our “deadline” just passed and we have about 10 applicants who will travel to Germany in late June and stay with a like minded students for three weeks before returning to California with their friend who will stay three weeks here. There are 22 young Germans who are excited to come here which leaves us short on District 5220 kids ages 15-19. So we need at least 12 more applicants to fill the program. Please contact the young folks in your sphere of influence to encourage them to apply. We want to make this year’s program the smashing success that the past several years have been and hope you can help. Please contact Lee Thoma at (209) 586-2475.

Stockton Rotary Centennial – the date is Feb 1, 2014. We wish to make this a celebratory series of events to share a century of service with the greater Stockton community. The committee has chosen five areas of focus. They are Projects, Events, Book, History and Publicity. If you wish to help in one or more of these areas please contact Susan Drake at secretary@stocktonrotary.org We are in need of historical items for our club to include in publications and media announcements. We are asking past presidents and all our members to put on their thinking caps, search your offices and homes for historical tidbits. Grocery Card Fundraiser – Our new card has the Rotary logo and name on them. Grocery rebate cards are available at the meetings. The Club will receive a rebate of 3% of purchases at SaveMart, Smart Foods, Food Max, and Lucky’s. The card may also be used when purchasing pharmaceuticals. To date we have received over $1691. If you would like additional cards for family, friends see Susan.

James E. Niskanen is the Retired Director of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods for the City of Modesto, California.  Other positions he has held include:  Interim City Manager; Interim Deputy City Manager; Interim Community and Economic Development Director and Interim Public Works Director.  Jim also served as Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Modesto; Program Manager/Recreation Supervisor for the City of Sunnyvale, CA; Recreation Supervisor for the City of Alameda, CA; and Recreation Program Coordinator for the City of Sunnyvale .  He received his B.S. degree in Recreation Administration and Leisure Services from San Jose State University (1976).  Read here for more info about our speaker. Since retiring in June 2009, Jim has been a highly sought after national speaker on telling his story of surviving Sudden Cardiac Arrest in August 2008.  He also is the Community Chair for the American Heart Association Heart Walk – Modesto in September 2010.

Annual 5k,10k Memorial Day Run – Kerry Krueger.  The annual 5k and 10k Memorial day run is coming and sponsorships are needed please see Kristen Dyke. The date is Monday, May 28 at 8:00 a.m.  $30 for pre-registration ($20 a piece for a family of four).  Live music at the end!!! We need sponsors. Paul Harris Fellows – the club’s goal this year is$43,875 to exceed $200 per member in donations.  We are less than three Paul Harris Fellowship’s from achieving this goal.  Congratulations everyone – good job!

District Simplified Grants – the club received a check for $2,100 from the District Governor for three projects that were recently completed.  The three projects are Children’s’ quilts for Rotaplast, Latino Literacy Project, and the Franklin High School garden.  These funds come from the donations the club makes to the Rotary Foundation.

District Conference – the club had 15 members in Modesto for parts of the Conference.  A good time was had by all.  There was a special session celebrating 25 years of Women in Rotary honoring Judy Chambers as the first woman in our club, Karen Munro as the first woman president and Susan Drake as the first woman district governor.

Awards – the club received several awards at the District Conference including New Generations recognition, 3rd place for large club and Foundation Service, 2nd place for International and Community Service, 2nd place for the Bulletin, 1st place for Vocational Service and the club tied for Best Large Club in the district.

Scholarship Interviews – Susan Drake, Nick Curtin, Dave Tygett, and the Interact advisors interviewed four students for the Susan Drake Interact Community Service Scholarship.  All four students were excellent candidates, have been accepted at the colleges of their choice, had outstanding grades and were active in their communities.  All said they would like to be part of Rotary in the future and plan to continue with their community service.  Next week the club will have the opportunity to meet the students as the Interacters run the meeting and the scholarships are awarded.

Dictionaries – all third graders in Stockton have received a dictionary from a donation of 5,000.  Each class also received the book Apple Dumpling.  The club has received many thank you notes and letters from the children.

Ambassadorial Scholar – Last week the club received a visit from Nancy Brady Ernst, a former ambassadorial scholar.  She wanted the club to know that she really appreciated the club’s supporting her and when she left she made a donation to Stockton Rotary to continue the good work that  we do.

Carla Edith Jimena, Team Member.  University Education, Assistant Professor.  Carla does instruction in research, extension and public service in the areas of Human Ecology, sustainable development and social development.  Carla is married with three children.

Gay Marie Francisco, Team Member.  School Administrator.  Instructor at the College Level, Bachelor of Arts in Communication.  Job responsibilities include institutional relations, public affairs, marketing communications.  Gay Marie is single.

Mark Twain: Speaking Eternally: Humor for Social Justice

Gary spoke about Mark Twain and focused more on Samuel Clemens his real name and life.  Samuel Clemens was born in 1835 in Hannibal Missouri and he passed away in 1910.  Gary told us that Samuel Clemens wrote for the Sacramento Union,

He wrote as people spoke.  Samuel Clemens worked as a riverboat master pilot and that is where the name Mark Twain. Mark Twain is a term used to measure the depth of water.  Ideally 12 feet is needed for boats to make a safe passage.

As Samuel Clemens became older he made many lectures around the world to make money for his family, As he became older he felt responsible for the death of his brother and his sister.  Samuel’s young son also passed away and his daughter died of spinal meningitis when he was giving a lecture.

Samuel was very devoted to his wife and missed her terribly when she passed away.  Gary made the presentation very interesting by using numerous quotes made by Mark Twain.  Gary also told us about his passion for reading and understanding Mark Twain’s life.

District 5220 Conference – April 20 & 21.  Two full days of quality speakers, meals, entertainment, awards, and fun in MODESTO! Register for the full conference package or mix and match meals and sessions to fit your time and budget. Each venue will require a special pass which you will find in your registration packet. Asparagus Festival – Date is April 27-29.  Need volunteers for Saturday and Sunday.  Sign up sheets on the tables.  Contact is John Green.

District Simplified Grant Suggestions.  You are encouraged to make suggestions.  The project must match one of the Rotary areas of interest, peace/conflict resolution, disease control and prevention, water sanitation, maternal and child health, education/literacy, economic or community development.  Typically these grants are in the area of $2000 to $3000.  Types of projects in the past have been purchase of dictionaries, support of a literacy project by buying books and supplies and a vegetable garden at a local high school.

Gary Putnam – “Mark Twain: Speaking Eternally: Humor for Social Justice”.  Gary has been a member of our Rotary Club since 1991 and served as Club President 2008-09.    He has presented characterizations of Abraham Lincoln as well as Mark Twain at club events.  Prior to his retirement Gary served as Senior Pastor at Central United Methodist Church, 1990-2003.  He came to California to serve as the first University Chaplain at Pacific in 1983.  Most of his professional career has been spent on university campuses at Iowa State, University of Wisconsin – LaCrosse, and the University of Northern Iowa.  He also served an internship at First Methodist in downtown Hollywood.  Gary’s wife, Gillian Murphy, serves as the Director of the Small Business Development Center.  They have two daughters and six grandchildren.

Get on the Bus-Uniting Children With Their Mothers and Fathers in Prison

Get on the Bus is a program started by a group of nuns to facilitate children of inmates visiting with their parents during the parent’s incarceration.

It can cost as much as $700 for a child to visit with the parent.
Get on the Bus annually connects 1,500 children on 60 buses to visit their parent in 10 of the 33 prisons in California.

Get on the Bus organizes the trips each year through advertising for both children and prisoners who wish to see each other. This year 39 children will board five different buses stopping in Stockton to pick them up and transport them to visit with their parent.

The children range in age from one month to 27.  Individuals can support these visits through monetary donations and donations of supplies and snacks.

One bus trip averages $6,200.

Rotary Foundation Giving – Ken Steele. We have given $150 per member for the current year.  Our goal is $200 per member.

Cesar Chavez High School Senior Picnic – Stockton Rotary has helped sponsor the senior class picnic to be held on Thursday, April 19th at Cesar Chavez High School from 8:00 AM to 11:00AM. Look for the “jump tents”..  They have invited any of our members who might like to chaperon and help serve food to join them. District Simplified Grant Suggestions.  You are encouraged to make suggestions.  The project must match one of the Rotary areas of interest, peace/conflict resolution, disease control and prevention, water sanitation, maternal and child health, education/literacy, economic or community development.  Typically these grants are in the area of $2000 to $3000.  Types of projects in the past have been purchase of dictionaries, support of a literacy project by buying books and supplies and a vegetable garden at a local high school.
Please submit to Graham Tweedy no later than May 2, 2012.

Stockton Rotary Centennial – the date is Feb 1, 2014. We wish to make this a celebratory series of events to share a century of service with the greater Stockton community. The committee has chosen five areas of focus. They are Projects, Events, Book, History and Publicity. If you wish to help in one or more of these areas please contact Susan Drake at secretary@stocktonrotary.org We are in need of historical items for our club to include in publications and media announcements. We are asking past presidents and all our members to put on their thinking caps, search your offices and homes for historical tidbits. Grocery Card Fundraiser – Our new card has the Rotary logo and name on them. Grocery rebate cards are available at the meetings. The Club will receive a rebate of 3% of purchases at SaveMart, Smart Foods, Food Max, and Lucky’s. The card may also be used when purchasing pharmaceuticals. To date we have received over $1691. Next Week’s Program – April 11, 2012

Alayna Johnson, Northern California Regional Coordinator for Get On The Bus. Uniting Children With Their Mothers and Fathers in Prison. Alayna has been working with incarcerated individuals and their families for the past four years.  Her path began as a director for a weekly tutoring program which brought undergraduates from UC Berkeley to assist in the education classes at San Quentin State Prison.  Through this program she learned about the hidden victims of crime and turned her attention toward the affects of incarceration on families, partners, and children of those behind the walls.  After volunteering with Get On The Bus for two years, she is honored to be brought on to the first full-time position in Northern California.

Read To Me, Stockton!

Read to Me, Stockton! is an effort to address a serious problem affecting San Joaquin County.  As a nation we are facing a change in job descriptions where 85% of current jobs require post secondary education. In San Joaquin County, 20% of our students can’t read English and 28% fall below the federal poverty level. Statistics show that 2/3 of children who can’t read well are destined for prison and/or welfare.

The solution is spearheaded by Mayor Ann Johnston’s project – Read To Me, Stockton! This program strives to improve literacy by providing reading training to parents, providing measurements of success, and partnering with Dolly Partons’ Imagination Library.  The Imagination Library program provides a book a month to a child from birth to age five. The book is mailed to the child which creates a strong bond between the book and the recipient.

It costs only $25 to sponsor a child to receive an age appropriate book each month for one year.  So far 1300 children are enrolled in the program.  The fact that a child’s brain is 90% developed by age three reinforces the need to act quickly in the effort to develop a literate, competitive, and prosperous populace in San Joaquin County.

Next Week’s Program – April 4, 2012

Ann Johnston, Craig LaFargue and Graham Tweedy.  The Read to Me, Stockton! project celebrated the kickoff for the program on August 21, 2011 at Fillmore School.  This followed months of preparation by all involved.  Less than one year later, we have registered over 800 children, ages 0 to 5.  These children are receiving an age appropriate book each month from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

Come join us this coming Wednesday.  You will be reminded of the incredible importance of reaching our youngest citizens to begin their life with a book in their lap.  You may be surprised of the need we have in our county for our help.  You will be impressed with the organization, under Mayor Ann Johnston’s leadership, that has been put in place. You will be pleased to learn of the work that Stockton Unified School District, in the person of Debra Keller, has put into this project.  You will hear from a mother whose child is receiving a book each month.

Oh, one more thing – and you thought I was done.  A video is being produced.  We go first class!

Report on a District Simplified Grant.  President Renna Beinoris recognized Sharon and Graham Tweedy and members of Henry School who received a district simplified grant to help fund the Latino Family Literacy Project which encourages and trains parents to read with their children using books written in Spanish and English.  Members from Henry school who visited the club were Joni Jimenez, Vice Principal; Susan Ollis, 1st grade teacher; Lorena Cacho and Leticia Navarette, parents who participated in the program.

Sherry Dickhoff – Executive Director. Habitat for Humanity

  Our Story

The local chapter for Habitat For Humanity serves from Lodi to Tracy.

Sherry told us that group is currently in 80 countries.  The primary goal of Habitat for Humanity is to build or remodel homes for families in need who can afford to pay a mortgage.

Any person who has lived in the county for more than one year and has a job can apply, but they have to be able to pay the mortgage which Habitat for Humanity provides.  The family also has to provide 500 hours of sweat equity in building their home.

Currently the local chapter is servicing 17 loans and soon that number will reach 19.  The money received from these loans are then used to fund future projects.

Sherry also told us about the Habitat for Humanity Restore store located on Fremont Street that sells donated hardware and home improvement items to assist in funding their projects.

Habitat for Humanity in cooperation with Lowe’s also coordinates a training program for women to give women training on home improvements.

Habitat for Humanity is always looking for volunteers.  You have to be at least 16 to volunteer in construction projects.  Finally, Sherry told us about a new project called Dream Creek Subdivision on the east side of Hwy 99 near Arch Road and Mariposa Road.  The Habitat for Humanity local chapter bought 19 lots and they hope to buy more to build a subdivision of affordable homes.  Currently two homes are near completion.

Jim Coleman-Give My Regards to Broadway, Remember Me to SCT!  Jim Coleman is starting his seventh season as Producing Director of Stockton Civic Theatre and is thrilled to be a part of the ever-growing artistic community in Stockton.

Jim’s diverse career has spanned the worlds of theatre, opera and television. Jim’s Broadway credits as a Musical Director include Sweeney Todd, starring Angela Lansbury, the 1983 revival of Mame, starring Angela Lansbury, and Anything Goes, starring both Patti LuPone and Leslie Uggams.

National Tours include: The Sound of Music, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 42nd Street, A Little Night Music, Show Boat, and Sweeney Todd, which was subsequently released on video. Donation – Two Thunder tickets and a ride on the Zamboni were provided by Susan Drake and auctioned off to Bill Brown for $100. Proceeds to go towards a Paul Harris Fellowship.

A Big Thanks – PE Graham Tweedy thanked Gary Frush for his work over the last few years for the Rotary Read-In.  Under his leadership, with major help from others such as Scott McElhinnie, the number of volunteers coordinated by our club has risen from about 75 to over 350.

World War II Flying Ace

In addition to being a WWII P-38 fighter pilot, and a Distinguished Flying Cross recipient, Bill has two other major accomplishments in his life: he has published a book about his experiences in WWII and he was one of the developers of Pine Mountain Lake.

Bill entered WWII in the Army, but quickly switched to the Army Air Force to pursue is desire to fly a P-38 fighter. He saw a sign on his Army base, recruiting pilots. He wandered in and took the test without preparation. He was one of six who completed his class successfully.

He flew 110 missions in his P-38, 104 were combat missions and 4 were weather related.

He served in an elite group of 32 pilots selected from 32 states, later known as  the 454th Fighter Squadron, sent to stop the Japanese from taking more territory. Twenty eight of the thirty-two were killed in action.

His Distinguished Flying Cross was awarded for downing one enemy aircraft and eluding two others while strafing an enemy air-field.

District 5220 Conference – April 20 & 21.  Two full days of quality speakers, meals, entertainment, awards, and fun in MODESTO! Register for the full conference package or mix and match meals and sessions to fit your time and budget. Each venue will require a special pass which you will find in your registration packet. Rotary House – President Renna asked us to mark our calendars, Saturday May12, for a clean up visit to Rotary House on the grounds of San Joaquin General Hospital.

Rummage Sale – Don Barry.  May 19 is the big day.  Start collecting.  Call Don for pickup.  Papers are on our tables to sign up for duties and gifts of precious stuff.

Stockton Rotary Centennial – the date is Feb 1, 2014. We wish to make this a celebratory series of events to share a century of service with the greater Stockton community. The committee has chosen five areas of focus. They are Projects, Events, Book, History and Publicity. If you wish to help in one or more of these areas please contact Susan Drake at secretary@stocktonrotary.org We are in need of historical items for our club to include in publications and media announcements. We are asking past presidents and all our members to put on their thinking caps, search your offices and homes for historical tidbits. Please contact Frank Whitney at fwhitney@midcalbbb.org to help him in this task.

Grocery Card Fundraiser – Our new card has the Rotary logo and name on them. Grocery rebate cards are available at the meetings. The Club will receive a rebate of 3% of purchases at SaveMart, Smart Foods, Food Max, and Lucky’s. The card may also be used when purchasing pharmaceuticals. To date we have received over $1691. If you would like additional cards for family, friends see Susan.

Bill Behrns-World War II Flying Ace.  Hitch a ride with Captain Bill Behrns in his P-38 Lightning fighter plane through hair-raising adventures including flying at an altitude of 50 feet over the Southwest desert, patrolling the Northwest coast during potential Japanese invasion, and dogfights over the jungles of China, Burma, India during WWII.  Bill is one of the few surviving aces of WWII.

Scott provided us with an overview and update on the I-5 North Stockton Freeway Widening and Pavement Reconstruction Project.  The goals of this project are to reduce congestion, improve mobility, decrease commute time, encourage High Occupancy Vehicle use, and reduce sound impacts from the existing freeway.

The project encompasses four stages with completion set for spring 2015. During the project we can expect local road closures, noise, and delays.

Scott reminded us that the speed limit in the construction zones is 55 MPH and that worker safety is a priority.
