Bill Behrns-World War II Flying Ace.  Hitch a ride with Captain Bill Behrns in his P-38 Lightning fighter plane through hair-raising adventures including flying at an altitude of 50 feet over the Southwest desert, patrolling the Northwest coast during potential Japanese invasion, and dogfights over the jungles of China, Burma, India during WWII.  Bill is one of the few surviving aces of WWII.

Scott Guidi-Caltrans Project Manager for the I-5 RehabilitationThe Project

Scott provided us with an overview and update on the I-5 North Stockton Freeway Widening and Pavement Reconstruction Project.  The goals of this project are to reduce congestion, improve mobility, decrease commute time, encourage High Occupancy Vehicle use, and reduce sound impacts from the existing freeway.

The project encompasses four stages with completion set for spring 2015. During the project we can expect local road closures, noise, and delays.

Scott reminded us that the speed limit in the construction zones is 55 MPH and that worker safety is a priority.

Club Announcements

District Assembly – To get us all started, for our up coming Rotary Year with DGE Liz Hosmer, the next District Assembly will be on March 31 at the University of California, Merced. 8:30 to 1. Annual 5k,10k Memorial Day Run – Kerry Krueger.  The annual 5k and 10k Memorial day run is coming and sponsorships are needed please see Kristen Dyke. Blood Bank – Duane Isetti. The month of March is donation month to the local Blood Bank.  If you can participate please consider donating blood to the Delta Blood Bank. Make sure to remind the Delta Blood Bank that you are a Stockton Rotary Member.

District 5220 Conference – April 20 & 21.  Two full days of quality speakers, meals, entertainment, awards, and fun in MODESTO! Register for the full conference package or mix and match meals and sessions to fit your time and budget. Each venue will require a special pass which you will find in your registration packet. Asparagus Festival – Date is April 27-29.  Need volunteers.  Sign up sheets on the tables.  Contact is John Green.

Rotary House – President Renna asked us to mark our calendars, Saturday May12, for a clean up visit to Rotary House on the grounds of San Joaquin General Hospital.

Rummage Sale – Don Barry.  May 19 is the big day.  Start collecting.  Call Don for pickup.

Stockton Rotary Centennial – the date is Feb 1, 2014. We wish to make this a celebratory series of events to share a century of service with the greater Stockton community. The committee has chosen five areas of focus. They are Projects, Events, Book, History and Publicity. If you wish to help in one or more of these areas please contact Susan Drake at secretary@stocktonrotary.org We are in need of historical items for our club to include in publications and media announcements. We are asking past presidents and all our members to put on their thinking caps, search your offices and homes for historical tidbits. Please contact Frank Whitney at fwhitney@midcalbbb.org to help him in this task.

Grocery Card Fundraiser – Our new card has the Rotary logo and name on them. Grocery rebate cards are available at the meetings. The Club will receive a rebate of 3% of purchases at SaveMart, Smart Foods, Food Max, and Lucky’s. The card may also be used when purchasing pharmaceuticals. To date we have received over $1691. If you would like additional cards for family, friends see Susan.
