Rear Admiral Joseph “Pepe” Castillo – United States Coast Guard

Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.

On this 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Rear Admiral Joseph Pepe Castillo of the United States Coast Guard spoke to us of that Day of Infamy that cost the lives of over 2400 men and injured many more.

He spoke of the bravery displayed by our servicemen illustrated by the accounts of two men (of fifteen) who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for their service on that day, some posthumously. Rear Admiral Castillo shared a favorite quote, the power of the heart is the strength of humanity , in reflection of the sacrifices made and the determination to heal and work for peace.

Shifting his talk to the subject of the US Coast Guard, he informed us of the magnitude of the daily work the Coast Guard does. On an average day the US Coast Guard saves 12 lives, conducts 64 search and rescues, and confiscates 842 lbs of cocaine heading for our shores.

Rear Admiral Castillo was introduced by Jim Dyke.
