John Donnelly- DEA

Overview of the DEA and Drug Trends in the Central Valley

John shared with the club some history of the DEA. In 1968 there was a Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. The DEA was organized in 1973. Today there are 4800 agents serving all over the world. Some of those areas include South Africa, Afghanistan, London, and Buenos Aires. Fifty percent of the DEA are former policemen and policewomen.

The trend of today includes polycrime organizers who are into more than just drug traffic. The crimes include identity theft, fraud and other extraneous violations.

In the past year seven million marijuana plants were found in California. This is more than all other states combined.
New scams include calls from someone, claiming to be an agent from the DEA, asking for tax money from people who are taking prescribed drugs.

John said that legal drugs and alcohol kill more people annually than illegal drugs!

John Donnelly was introduced by Bill Gass.
