“Rotary and Hope Haven: Wheelchairs to Peru

Peru is the third largest country in South America with 13 states the size of California. The Wheelchair mission team visited 3 cities: Lima, Cusio, and Chiclayo and enjoyed sightseeing, visiting beaches, malls and the catacombs in Lima. They also toured four ruins in Cusio including MachuPicchu, one of the fifteen wonders of the world.

Wheelchair distribution began in Cusio, where the volunteers worked in a clinic helping with treatments, feeding children, and adjusting chairs. Wheelchairs were customized to fit all shapes and sizes from children to adults, with a variety of tilt, height, width, headrest and other comfort options.

Most of the patients were children with cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. Some patients were orphans; some were disabled adults. Not all kids were receptive, but they all enjoyed tipping back! In Chiclayo the team also fitted patients into performance chairs. These were like hand bikes allowing athletic performance (i.e. the ability to play basketball) and were best suited for adults with good upper body strength.

Overall the team fitted 200 wheelchairs in 6 days. The message Garrett Norris and Shiren Assaly came back with was the importance and value of helping others.

Shiren Assaly and Garrett Norris were introduced by Cathy Peterson.
