Speaker…

Bob LawrenceForensic Pathologist, San Joaquin County Coroner s office

“Medical Aspects of Death Investigations”

Or a $68.14 case of fatal indigestion

In real world vs. Hollywood death investigation, there is no substitute for education, experience, objectivity and attention to detail.

The trained examiner can interpret the cause of death from the impressions left on an infant s head by crib bars, spot the odd vacuum cleaner used as a weapon in an otherwise messy room and distinguish a bear paw from a human hand.

Other skills related by Bob Lawrence was the ability to determine the trajectory of a bullet, the height of automobile bumpers at the point of impact and the difference between accidental death and suicide in an auto accident.

Coroners are able to determine the intent of the one yielding a knife, the degree of rage provoked by riding one s horse into the middle of a friendly pool game at the local bar and they can count the change too.
