Jean was an Ambassadorial Scholar in 1989. She speaks to many Rotary groups about the long term effects of investment in the Foundation.

She was a great speaker using humor often. Being from the Reno area she said, Reno is so close to hell that you can see sparks.

Some of the points she made during her talk:

  • It takes 10,000 repetitions of a word for a deaf person to be able to say it.
  • 90% of deaf children s parents do not know sign language.
  • An average of 5% of deaf children go on to college because most are at a 4th grade reading level.
  • 80% of her kids go on to college and have a 10th grade reading level.

PolioPlus Event – Rotary will be in the center court of the Weberstown Mall Jan. 8th-10th. We have three days to raise $5000 for PolioPlus. We will have brochures, pins, posters, maybe Motorcycle Bob and his bike and a slick video that will be on continuous play. The event will be staffed by Rotarians and Interactors and hopefully polio survivors to tell their stories. We are hoping to have short presentations on the challenges of polio and a question and answer time. We are aware that most people under a certain age are not aware that polio exists or that it was a real threat here in America not that many years ago. Contact Scott McElhinnie for more information and to volunteer to help.

Grocery Card Fundraiser Grocery rebate cards are available at the meetings. The Club will receive a rebate of 3% of purchases at SaveMart, Smart Foods, Food Max, and Lucky s. The card may also be used when purchasing pharmaceuticals. In the first six weeks we have raised $141.

District Conference 2010 – It is not too early to plan for next year’s conference which will be hosted by our DG Susan Drake and held at entrancing South Lake Tahoe. The club will pay for the first 20 early conference registrations We suggest you don’t miss out. Check out a video starring Kayaker Susan and Chef Dudley.
