Next Week’s Program – Tuesday November 24, 2009. All City Thanksgiving Luncheon

Jean Irwin – is a retired Teacher of the Deaf from the Washoe County School District in Reno, Nevada. She has taught in grades pre-school through 12th grade in 12 schools. Jean was an Ambassadorial Scholar in 1989. She speaks to many Rotary groups about the long term effects of investment in the Foundation.

The Ambassadorial Scholarship Jean received allowed her to do research into reading and deafness 20 years ago which earned her a Master s Degree from Nottingham University in England. After this education, her students broke what is considered a glass ceiling for the deaf and achieved high levels of reading. She is now District 5190’s Literacy Chair and wants to use what she learned about Reading to help encourage and foster more literacy involvement from clubs. Please read a more complete bio for Jean Irwin.

Speaker…

Rick Aschieris – Director the Port of Stockton

“The Port of Stockton”

Rick Aschieris presented an overview of the port from it s beginnings to current challenges. The Port’s history dates back to 49er times but was officially opened as an organized port on February 2, 1933.

Today it ranks second in tonnage of shipments for an inland port on the west coast, with Portland taking first place. It takes a ship eight hours to reach the Stockton Port from the Golden Gate bridge and it will pass six other ports on it s way.

Therein lies the need for the Stockton Port to promote itself. Selling points include the access to railroad lines, Interstate 5, and the deep shipping channel.

Rick Aschieris was introduced by Joe Serra.

The event will be staffed by Rotarians and Interactors and hopefully polio survivors to tell their stories. Contact Scott McElhinnie for more information and to volunteer to help. mcelhinnie@sbcglobal.net
