Language, Youth, Culture and Technology
– Richard Sterling is the Executive Director Emeritus of the National Writing Project (NWP), Interim Associate Dean for Professional Programs and Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in the Graduate School of Education. Since 2003, he has served as chair of the Advisory Panel to the College Board s National Commission on Writing. Formerly he was the founder and director of the Institute for Literacy Studies at Lehman College, an Organized Research Unit at the City University of New York, and a member of the faculty at Lehman College. He was also founder and director of the New York City Writing Project and the New York City Mathematics Project, both of which are housed within the Institute for Literacy Studies. Ambassadorial Scholar – Susan Drake announced this year s District Ambassadorial Scholar is Kendra Bruno who graduated from University of Pacific with a degree in International Business Spanish. Kendra will be studying Sustainable Development Environment at the United Nations sponsored University for Peace if she is accepted. The scholarship is $25,000.

Membership Moment – Renna Beinoris asked all those who enjoy Rotary to stand. The Club stood up. She made the point – let’s share our enjoyment of Rotary with someone and invite them to the club.

Memorial Donations – In memory of Brigitte Smith, Harley Smith’s wife, donations to SRE – Jerry Zedlitz, Reid Johnson and Nick Curtin.

Better Business Bureau Award – Frank Whitney, MidCal Better Business Bureau CEO and Chris Weed, current president of the Board of Directors, received the award from Congressman McNerney. The award recognizes the bureau for 80 years of service to our community.

Update from Congress

U. S. Congressman Jerry McNerney shared his insights on current events in Washington. Congressman McNerney praised Stockton as a city that has a lot of potential .

Congressman McNerney encouraged Stockton stating, in the 1900 s it was a good place to be and could be again with time and focus on education. Congressman McNerney explained that the economy is turning because job losses and foreclosures are slowing and that the Obama Administration Stimulus Package saved the country from a depression .

The Congressman took many questions from the audience.

Club Announcements

Robert Paoletti’s Blog Page – Robert, a member of our club, is on leave from the Stockton Police Department for a term of duty in Iraq. He will be training Iraqi police. Robert will be reporting on his activities. Please visit his page. You are encouraged to comment on his reports and thus keep in touch with him while he is absent from our club. We will alert you when Robert sends us new information.

Music in the Park – Nick Curtin – announced last week s Concert in the Park was a great success with approximately 60 Rotarians and guests in attendance.

Facebook – Gary Hansen – Stockton Rotary is now on Facebook. Check out our new page by going to and search for “Rotary Club of Stockton”. Of course do not use the quotation marks. We intend to evolve this as you use it. Who knows where it goes but it is one more avenue for Rotarians to keep in touch and up to date on what is going on.

Annual Fund Raiser – Cathy Dodson gave us a brief presentation of the annual fundraiser event. The planned date is October 10th at Jessie’s Grove Winery and the theme is a Boots, Bales and Barbeque; $50 per person. More to follow; save the date.
Scott McElhinnie won the name the event contest, one free tickets to the event. He also won the worst name award and was given a rubber chicken.

Blood Pressure Test – President Michael announced the next blood pressure check is next week s meeting between 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Golf Tournament – Brant Fetters – the event will be at SGCC on Monday August 24. Breakfast and range balls at 8:30 AM. Shotgun start at 10:00 AM. Lunch to follow. Contact Brant Fetters or sign up at the table or go to our online calendar. A few spots are still open.

Foundation Dinner Susan Drake announced the Foundation dinner will be held on October 24, 2009 in Tracy. Distribution of envelopes with raffle tickets, counting toward a Paul Harris Fellowhip, started today.

Grocery Card Fundraiser President Michael announced grocery rebate cards will be available at the meetings. The Club will receive a rebate of 3% of purchases at SaveMart, Smart Foods, Food Max, and Lucky s.

Stockton Rotary Endowment President Michael announced that due to the current investment market conditions there will be no distributions from the Endowment this year.

District Conference 2010 – It is not too early to plan for next year’s conference which will be hosted by our DGE Susan Drake and held at entrancing South Lake Tahoe. They have created some incentives to help us make a decision. We suggest you don’t miss out. Coming soon a video starring Kayaker Susan and Chef Dudley. Full details and the ability to sign up are on the district website.
